• General Introduction
It’s important thinking about work in the future, because the ways we work today will change, and so the life in the city will change completely. This means that there will be new functions in the city, new typologies and new tools to live in the future.
• Short intro of the city
Cagliari is the chief town of Sardinia and is the most populated city of the Island. This is due mainly to the presence of the resindential Metropolitan Area, next to the dense city. The towns of the Metropolitan Area are: Pirri, Monserrato, Selargius, Quartucciu, Quartu S. Elena. The Wide Area includes also Sinnai, Settimo S. Pietro, Maracalagonis, Capoterra, Elmas, Assemini, Sestu, Decimomannu, Pula, Sarroch e Villa S.Pietro. In the last twenty years the population of Cagliari decreased on behalf of the towns of the Wide Area but services and workplaces remained centralized in the chief town, albeit poorly connected to the neighboring. The depopulation causes are: -high price of houses -lack of expansion areas inside the city -lack of services in the historical centre -bad accessibility and communication of historical districts
• Relation to sustainability
Due to the centralization of services pendular flow to Cagliari is very high and the arterial roads are interest by traffic peaks. This problems will be resolved with the institution of a Metropolitan Area Government able to manage and provide adequate services inside the city and promoting the dislocation in the peripheral centers and the densification of the chief town up to a population of 350000 inhabitants. Densifing the city, the price of houses will decrease pushing the population to come back in the centre. It will bring the necessity of new services, and so the economic recovery now stalled. In fact the unemployment rate is high in the young population due to the advanced age of the active population. This phenomenon of repopulation of the centre reduce traffic problems and CO2 emissions.
• Relation to work
In Cagliari it’s possible to study all the economy sectors because it is the most influencial economic power of Sardinia. There is the harbor, that is the most important physical way to communicate all over the world. The city will grow in relationship to the harbor. The main sectors of economy in Sardinia are Agriculture, Handcrafts and Tourism.
In this vision of the future of Cagliari, Agriculture will be automatized, and people can buy or cultivate primary food by themselves or in their free time. The secondary sector has to increase to raise the economy of Sardinia. In the past there were very important industries, like petrochemical, aluminum factories, and handcrafts. Handcraft is linked to traditional and cultural issues, and it is an attraction also for tourism. In the future handcrafts will be a system of collaboration between artists, architects and designer. Tourism is the most productive sector, but in the future it will have to increase its services, especially linked to the harbor. In fact we chose the harbor as our intervention area because it is the only physical way to allow the island to communicate with the other parts of the world. In a second step, seniors keep working inside the buildings while young people start to work in open spaces. The retirement age will increase more. There is an increasement in handcrafts and in care for elderly people. Vertical farms start to grow up and acquire a huge importance because people can cultivate and buy primary food by themselves. This buildings will be automated, so probably greengrocers will disappear but agriculture will increase more. Tourism will grow in relationship to the harbor and its services. In a third step there will be a crisis of conventional workspaces and office buildings. Because of technology people will work in different spaces that are non stable. In front of the harbor will rise temporary multifunction pavilions where people can work: renting a working space or just a single workstation in shared table. People will work while they are eating or playing sports, so there will be built new typologies of public and work spaces, as work and coffee pavilions and free time and sports pavilions linked to eco-sustainability principles of the city of the future. Crafts will increase their economic power thanks to technology, there will be different ways of production with the collaboration between professional and artists. The arts and crafts pavilions will be a prototype for all this activities in Sardinia. Sardinia will be united under one government which will be transparent for the citizens. Most of the procedures will be executed on-line, so more space in the building will be used to hold public life. Offices in buildings will be leased or saled because workers can work outside the conventional offices or at home. Buildings will grow vertically. It will be possible to develop modular structures with different typologies that are studied and assembled based on different needs. In the fourth step, work continues its development in open spaces and temporary pavilions. Space becomes more complex according to function. People can work while they are doing other activities due to the increase of technology. In the fifth step, old office buildings are modified as residences, structures are maintained but there is a new configuration of spaces inside, where there is the need of different spaces. There no more need of any tool to work.

Craft’s and Art’s Pavilion
The pavilion represents the prototype of a larger network of handcrafts of the future in Sardinia. Crafts is a typical form of art and it makes a lot of interest not only for the island but also for Europe, and all over the world. The idea is to create a work network for handcrafts that brings new people to achieve and discover this kind of art and tourism. People, artists and professionals are working together to realize new products with new tools, as for example 3D printer. This tool turns around in the main harbors of Sardinia and people can order some craft’s products that will be realized in few days in the pavilion. Inside the pavilion are working also professional figures that experiment new form of different kind of design products and they can show the results in the exhibition path in ground floor, so people can try and test the final product or the different prototypes. The ground floor is also an automatic shop open 24 hours per day. The pavilion, with its strategic location in front of the harbor, shows this systems of relationships and illustrates how important and productive is this sector for Sardinia’s economy, with an exhibition path inside and outside the building.
Free time and sport Pavillion
In the future due to the exponential growth of technology, people no longer need a space dedicated solely to the work as it does today in traditional offices. In 2050 it will be possible to work through holograms without the support of physical facilities, will be born for this new hybrid spaces that will simultaneously play different types of activities. For this I designed a pavilion overlooking the port of Cagliari and which includes a multipurpose space. It is a main building surrounded by a skin that creates a new space dedicated to relaxation sessions provided that allow you to admire the harbor. The building contains a ground floor area where there are 2 pools with Jacuzzi equipped with seats that allow business people to work and relax at the same time, relieve stress and improve riel and quality of work.
In the future the operation of government will be significantly improved through the development of technology and particularly of the E-Government. Most of the paperwork will be done online, so there will be a smaller number of employed, but the employment for web security technicians will increase. The number of offices in government buildings will decrease in favor of the spaces dedicated to public life, which allow citizens to approach the political life of their city. The E-Government building of the future will house sites devoted to culture, such as archives and multimedia exhibitions, and will be accessible and transparent to the citizen. The large energy consumption in public buildings will be reduced because the building E-Government will be an example of sustainability and functionality. It will generate energy during the day thanks to photovoltaic panels on the façade and it will use this energy to grow in height on hydraulic pistons. During the night the building will transfer energy to the city lowing and using hydraulic power. It will also recycle rainwater to be totally sustainable.
Work and Coffee Pavilion
The project aims to create an innovative space that allows new graduates to work without having to open an office that would be too expensive. This bar is placed in the green and is under a roof designed to take advantage of weather, water, sun and wind, as shown in the diagrams. The bar is divided into areas that differ in function: there are more private areas, common areas, relaxation areas. You can eat in the workplace and avoid movements that cause stress.
Office Building - Reuse
Offices in buildings will be leased or saled because workers can work outside the conventional offices or at home. Buildings will grow vertically. It will be possible to develop modular structures with different typologies that are studied and assembled based on different needs. In the fourth step, work continues its development in open spaces and temporary pavilions. Space becomes more complex according to function. People can work while they are doing other activities due to the increase of technology. In the fifth step, old office buildings are modified as residences, structures are manteined but there is a new configuration of spaces inside, where there is the need of different spaces. There no more need of any tool to work. The idea of transforming an office building on a new concept of living space, work and leisure, it offers opportunities to explore an existing structure in order to optimize space for a new use. Keeping the concrete structure and the outer skin with a modernization of the concept of brise-soleil perform a conversion of a private building "public" building. It's true that there are completely private spaces such as living spaces, lofts , apartments ... it is also true that the provision of coworking spaces, Coffice, fitness and social spaces allow anyone to access the services that the new building offers. This new concept building manages to negotiate new ways of working, where each employee decides how and when it works, ,adapting their schedules without the need of a fixed place where they make their workday.
